I'm a little concerned with the Franchise tags.
I thought it was balanced well when all RFA's not coming off of ELC's were included in the tags but now it seems like it's too easy to keep everyone on your roster. I do like being able to keep RFA's until Unrestricted status though because it seems more realistic.
I was thinking instead of UFA tags. What if all UFA's go to open bidding. The winning offer being the highest total dollar amount of the contract (with a max of say 12M for 7 Years)
Now most NHLers will test the market but will usually resign with their team if the highest offer is matched.
So we could allow the original team additional time to match the highest offer. Every team would have 1 UFA match offer. You could gain an additional UFA match offer by making the playoffs. Something along those lines.
Really impressed with the league so far. Just thought i'd throw out this idea because i'm worried there won't be a lot of player movement with the new free agent rules.

I like it the way it is but if we are gonna change it then take down to 1 tag instead of 2..That would add more Free Agents U should be able to keep your stars!!! Makes Drafting more important in my eyes

Blues, you would still get to keep 1 UFA guaranteed with the method I described.
You get final match on the highest offer that your star receives.
Let's say Rick Nash is a UFA going into the offseason. Everyone can offer him a contract. Then when all offers are in. I still have the option to resign him at the highest offer.
The difference is that I have to decide if I want to give him that contract, instead of just automatically tagging him.
I do agree with you though that if tagging is the method used, dropping it to one would be better.

I also like 2 tags. It still means good players will be available. Most teams are still forced to let at least a player or two go with 2 tags I think.

I guess what i'm concerned with is how are teams going to improve without being able to bid on decent free agents ?
How often does a team have more than 2 decent UFAs ?

I support CBJ's completely in this discussion. You're going to see the teams like Philly, Vancouver, Boston, etc keeping all of their marquee FA's every year and the middle to the bottom of the packers will never get better - which will lead to turnover with those bottom teams GM's. If a team never has a realistic chance of winning, then why would someone want to manage the bottom teams then? Just my 2 cents.

We will probably come to some sort of a compromise, maybe 1 tag as is plus 1 tag like you suggested, or 2 tags of the kind you suggested (we will call them restricted tags)

Sounds like Offer Sheets for restricted free Agents to me.. U should be able too keep 1 UFA with a tag atleast cause u most likely wont have a chance at your other UFAS with a bid system..The bids will get really big and teams with no cap space have no chance cause players will get max pay.. I dont know

I dont know Those teams with no cap space though are the teams that already have numerous marquee players, so the idea would be to force teams into making trades and letting some top shelf talent go via UFA's so the bottom teams can get better. If everyone gets to keep most of their top shelf talent year after year, then what's the point in playing out the season? Just hand the Cup to one of the same 4-5 teams every season!

One issue with just having restricted tags is that it will be almost impossible to keep the player you tagged then with teams like the Blues and Isles having 30M in cap space

one example is my team nexdt year i have four UFA's and they are all great players.. now two of them will go to FA
vokoun semin wideman green.... if you can get anyone of those players in FA that would be huge for your team... and with the players if you use a tag on them what if they only get signed to a one year deal?

Having just one tag, or one offer match is a great idea.
There needs to be a way for bottom feeder teams to get more competitive quickly otherwise the same 5 teams have a shot at the Cup every year.
More player turnover, and more tough decisions for the good teams is needed.
